Winter Time Scuba Diving in Maui, Hawaii

Updated:

We regularly get emails asking us about all kinds of things in Maui.  The question below is a pretty good one for those of you visiting that scuba dive.

Hi Maui Information Guide Team,

We are planning to holiday in Hawaii in December in the lead up to Christmas.

Can you please advise if it is safe to scuba dive in December?

What are the waves / tides and currents like?

Thanks

Aloha Penelope and Kevin!

Tides/waves/currents change all the time.  In the winter time, you’re looking at much bigger waves, mostly on the north shore (dangerous to dive.)  I suggest going to the south side (or west side if no swell) and doing a shore dive or go by boat.  The best and safest way to dive is with professionals that can take you to the best sites.  We have a sunken ship, sunken WWII tank, and many pinnacles with abundant life.

Here is a map and descriptions of the many great spots to scuba in South Maui.
