Sprout Vegan Cafe, located in the Wailea Gateway Center, is the latest addition to a surprisingly minimal list of plant-based establishments on Maui. While the vegan title in the name might deter dedicated meat-eaters, we believe that even those with the most carnivorous diet will be pleasantly surprised.
Sprout's unique vegan comfort food sprung them to popularity after opening in the form of a food truck in June 2020. During a time when health, nutrition, and locally grown foods were more in demand than ever, Sprout thrived. And despite all odds during an evolving global pandemic, Sprout Vegan Cafe's demand outgrew its little truck and opened the doors at their brick and mortar location in Wailea less than a year later. Sprout is a success story if there ever was one.
Poke, sushi, ice cream, and lox toast are not something you would ordinarily expect out of a vegan restaurant. However, Sprout has found a niche serving delicious plant-based twists on a variety of comfort foods. Their menu spans an array of cuisines, and a quick glance reveals Thai, Mediterranean, Mexican, and even some locally inspired flavors.
Some of the menu items are influenced by the owner's upbringing in Hawaii. For example, the Huli Huli Bowl is a play on a popular Hawaiian favorite, Huli Huli chicken. While chicken is swapped for tofu, the sweet and savory Huli Huli sauce, grilled pineapple, and sesame tick all the boxes on this local dish. The kimchi fries are also Hawaii-inspired, similar to hurricane fries you might see at local hole-in-the-wall eateries. These bad boys are topped with sriracha aioli, kimchi, and loaded with furikake and green onions. Only the best organic ingredients are used at Sprout, and we particularly like their efforts to use as much local produce as possible.
Rumor has it that Sprout is hoping to obtain a liquor license in the future. For now, it's BYOB. However, their menu boasts some unique non-alcoholic beverages. The lavender fizzy is sweet, refreshing, and tangy, and the aloe slush is excellent after a long day in the sun. Although, the Natural Color Changing Lemonade just might steal the show. This tea changes from blue to bright purple when you pour in the added lemon juice. Not only is it a lot of fun to watch, but this drink is also high in antioxidants.
Sprout's brick and mortar location in the Wailea Gateway Center is clean, polished, and trim. As soon as you walk through the door, you'll be welcomed by one of the friendly staff members. There is both an indoor (with AC) and outdoor seating area. Inside, you'll find merch for sale, as well as a shelf that showcases local, sustainable businesses. Sprout also hosts live music, as well as picnic lunches!
(Please note that Sprout's indoor dining area is temporarily closed at the time of writing, and all live music events have been put on hold due to the current Maui County mandates. We hope to see things resume as usual once restrictions are changed.)
