The Procrastinator’s Last-Minute Gift Guide to Maui

Updated:

You know who you are. You’re the person in line for 12 gallons of eggnog at Costco on Christmas Eve, the person who pays extra for super expedited shipping, and the one who really hopes everyone else is also running late for Christmas brunch, lunch or dinner. I’m not judging. What I am doing is trying to offer you some easy, please-let-me-stop-browsing-online-stores-I’ve-never-heard-of shopping alternatives for awesome, local gifts on Maui for every member of your family.

Pandeia Compass Sundial Watches

Handmade on Maui by another radical chick with the best name ever (Kelsey, duh), these watches are the perfect gift for the artsy fashionista slash funky auntie in your family. Made from stained leather and antique brass, they come with engraved instructions for use and are available in a variety of colors and styles. Order one online or find them in several retail locations throughout the island.

DaFiN

Alright, gents, I did not forget about you. While these aren’t actually made on Maui, they’re the perfect gift for the friend, family member or special someone who lives on Maui and enjoys the ocean. These fins are used by the Hawaiian lifeguards and touted as the world’s best swim and surf fin, and I personally love their lightweight, small size, perfect for clipping onto your backpack or packing in your carry-on for a day of snorkeling fun. They come in several awesome colors and also include women’s styles and sizes. Order online or find them in several retailers throughout the island.

Two Tank Photo

Peter Rimkus is a kayak/SUP guide and underwater photographer on Maui, and his portfolio of turtles (taken at Turtle Town) and waves (taken at Big Beach) is beautiful, to say the least. Grab a metal or canvas print and give someone the gift of Maui’s underwater beauty. Contact him directly for pricing and details.

Go Somewhere/Do Something

If you’re really at a loss and totally out of time, the best thing you can do is take someone out for good ole fashioned real-life fun. This can mean a zipline tour, sunset cocktail cruise, ferry ride to Lana’i for the day, outrigger canoe whale watching tour, chef’s table dinner, a night at a resort in Hana, day rental of a 1957 Porsche Speedster reproduction convertible, camping trip to Kipahulu, tickets to an upcoming concert, spa day, you name it. You’ll look like a total hero and no one will ever know you just chose their present 10 minutes beforehand. Win-win.
