Nestled on the grounds of Montage Kapalua Bay, the resort's signature restaurant, Cane and Canoe, delivers on the standards of quality that Montage resorts are known for. Championed by Chef de Cuisine Ryan Ferguson, the menu at Cane and Canoe blends modern Hawaiian, American, and Asian cuisines with a primary focus on locally sourced seafood, meat, and produce.

The modern decor perfectly balances the restaurant's traditional Hawaiian focus pieces and architectural elements. The facade of the building resembles a Hawaiian canoe hale, where members of the community would gather to weave baskets, shave wood, and make sails. The interior of Cane and Canoe is dotted with a wealth of wooden scrollwork and woven decor to emulate this sentiment. A glossy replica of a canoe sits in the heart of the restaurant, aptly conveying Cane and Canoe's theme. Nightly live music, torch-lit outdoor seating, and striking palm-fringed ocean views elevate the upscale, tropical atmosphere at Cane and Canoe.

Naturally, as a restaurant with an ocean view, seafood is one of Cane and Canoe's primary focuses. An array of seafood like shrimp, lobster, octopus, salmon, and fresh-caught fish of the day are featured in appetizers and entrees. Needless to say, I immediately gravitated towards the seafood dishes, namely the lobster mac and cheese and the charred octopus. The lobster mac and cheese was delectable, rich, and was a perfect balance of lobster and pasta. The charred octopus, complimented by shishito peppers, chickpeas, and tomato chorizo, was bursting with flavors and texture. For entrees, I stuck with seafood, opting for the daily fish (which on our visit was monchong, cooked to perfection and served with a sweet tomato jam), while my companion went for the 7 oz filet mignon. We were once again impressed. For the finale, we opted for Cane and Canoe's signature dessert, Baked Hawaii- pineapple and mango ice cream, lilikoi cake, wafer crumb, and toasted meringue. Plated to resemble a pineapple, it was simply a work of art.



If wine is your drink of choice, you won't be disappointed by the sommelier-selected wine list at Cane and Canoe. However, the cocktail menu was too intriguing to pass up. I tried the Tradewinds, a concoction of vodka, rhubarb liqueur, strawberry, lemon, and sparkling Moscato. In a word, it was delightful. We also enjoyed the creative Lilikoiloma, a tropical play on the classic Paloma, with tequila, pink grapefruit liqueur, lilikoi, and soda- exquisite and tart.

Much like the service at Montage Kapalua Bay, the service at Cane and Canoe was top-notch and validated the restaurant's high-end status. From the smiling hostess who promptly sat us to our warm server who gave great recommendations and the bussers that buzzed around the restaurant attentively, Cane and Canoe does not skimp on hospitality.
