Maui Nui Golf Club

What can be said about the golf courses on Maui, besides perfection!  The courses here on the island have been designed by some of the top architects in the business, like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.  Challenging layouts coupled with world-class views and balmy weather make for some of the best-ranked courses in the world.

The self-proclaimed “friendliest” course on Maui, Maui Nui Golf Club, is situated in the heart of Kihei Town in South Maui. It hosts sweeping views of the ocean and Molokini below, and the majestic slopes of Haleakala above.  Spacious fairways, generous greens, and tricky trade winds create an engaging game for golfers of all levels.

THE COURSE

The Maui Nui Golf Club’s course was designed by Bill Newis, and consists of 18-holes spread out over 6,404 yards with a total par of 71. There is a hybrid Bermuda turf grass throughout, with a slope rating of 124, and a total course rating of 70.6.

The course utilizes all the best classic design elements in a diverse layout that has golfers hitting in all cardinal directions.  Smart golfers will enjoy the challenge of managing the trade winds that will switch trajectories on the ball depending on each hole being played.

The opening hole is a par-4, with great ocean views.  There is a chance at a birdie here when played downwind and easterly, with a good drive and avoiding a pond on the right.  If landed right, you’ve set up an approach shot to an elevated green.

The third par-3 is short and turns the golfer around northward toward gorgeous Haleakala. At the par-4 fourth hole, beware of a dogleg right-hand curve to the right about 220 yards off the tee. The total hole is 423-yards. So, one tip is to use the driver to push the ball over the trees and onto the fairway directly in front of the green.  If done right, you’re only a short chip and a putt away from a birdie!

At par-4 sixth, the hole runs due south with a nice pond sitting on the right, and a spectacular ocean view.  Coming along to the eighth hole, skilled golfers get a real test of their abilities and nerve. The total yardage of this par-5 hole is 513, but it can be reached with a good drive and a powerful second shot! Confident players have claimed it as an eagle hole.

Rounding the back nine, the course becomes even more aesthetically pleasing and athletically challenging.  Hole eleven is a par-4 and delights with incredible views of the West Maui mountains, ‘Iao Valley, and Ma’alaea Harbor.

Accuracy is important on the Par-4 at the fifteenth hole.  Protective bunkers and a hazardous pond call for keen precision with the club.  As a bonus, this hole makes for some stellar sunsets.

The final hole is a 563 yard par-5 with a massive green that hairpins to the left.  Some players opt for a lay-up shot to a wedge, and others test out a birdie.  Good luck on this final run!

With the addition of Kono’s on the Green, the Maui tech park, and the new Hokulani Golf Villas at Kailea Community, this area is becoming the new hub of life in sleepy South Maui.

There are 5 buildings comprising 180,000 square feet, but the park is only 10% finished, with nearly 400 acres ready for development.

This area of central Kihei combines accessibility to the pristine beaches and opulent boutiques of Wailea with the convenience of nearby basic amenities at the Piilani Shopping Center and surrounding businesses. It has become the new hidden gem of Maui.
