Warren and Annabelle's Magic Show
OK, so we were very skeptical about this show before seeing it. A magic show for adults? hmmm. It actually took us 5 years to go see it. Why all the hype? Well, the hype is right. This show is fantastic!
Our very skeptical group was led into a room without doors. They gave us a key and a riddle and told us to go in. We found our way in, and enjoyed the unusual entrance. Then we walked into a lavish parlor with a full bar and many cocktail tables and chairs all facing Annabelle. Annabelle is a ghost that plays the piano and takes requests. My first thought at this point was, "These drinks better be strong."
Annabelle was pretty versatile and took most requests. The cocktail waitresses had loads of personality and made it a lot of fun. We then went into the small theatre to see the show. It was nice to see that the show was set in a relatively small room. This way you can really see the magician working.
Enter Warren. All we can say is WOW! This guy is full of energy and pretty darned funny. Our skepticism melted away as he made everyone in the room howl with laughter. The magic was pretty amazing. I think I only figured out 2 of his tricks, but all the others could very well be magic. We didn't expect the show to be so funny.
Warning: If you are asked to sit in the front row, be ready for serious ridicule. If you don't like being on the spot, don't do it. Also, keep in mind that no matter where you sit, fun will be poked at you. He messes with everyone in the crowd.
It's obvious that Warren has been doing this for years. The show is great, he's able to think lightening fast, and the room is always full. This show is definitely worth seeing when visiting Lahaina. Get your tickets early because they sell out pretty much every night.
Ulalena
Ulalena is Maui's biggest and best show. Blending ancient Hawaiian lore and song with instruments from around the world. The show is performed at Maui Theatre, specifically built for this show.
The show begins with Hawaiian chant and the dance of a taro plant from the earth. From here the show moves through the history of Polynesian travelers first arriving in Hawaii and then growing with it. Through celebrating the harvest, to the false arrival of their God Lono, Maui moves through changes caused by the introduction of foreign influences and finally to Peles devastating final eruption. The rich history of Maui is explored with dance, song, and chant as the cast uses elaborate costumes to explain the myths and legends of Hawaiian past.
Some of the major highlights are the acrobatic dancers. One swings from the sky over the undulating ocean as Hina the moon goddess and another slides up and down a massive waterfall as Mo'o the lizard god. The eruption of Pele, the Goddess of the Volcanoes is a magnificent performance that overwhelmingly affects all the audience.
