Biking from Haleakala’s Summit

Updated:

We’re often asked how one can bike down Haleakala from the Crater Summit. This wasn’t a problem until October of 2007, when Haleakala National Park stopped commercial bike companies from allowing bikers to start their journey there. Now, if you want to bike from the top all the way to the bottom, you need to rent a bike. You can still do the full tour with bike companies, but you’ll start a little lower in elevation at the park entrance (around 6,500 ft instead of the summit 10,023ft).

Haleakala Sunrise Bike & Zip

For travelers looking to enhance their early morning biking experience down the slopes of Haleakala, we highly recommend taking a guided combo biking tour with the experienced folks at Skyline Hawaii. Providing round trip transportation from your accommodation, the morning begins with a narrated trip to the summit of Haleakala in time to witness a stunning sunrise, before making your way back down to the entrance of Haleakala National Park for a 21 switchback, downhill bike ride along the winding slopes. The panoramic views are unreal, and guests are rewarded with a continental breakfast before embarking on the final tour inclusion, a 5 line zipline through the lushest, gorgeous areas of Upcountry Maui. Well known as being the first zipline company in all of Hawaii, this tour company is our top pick for guided biking tours down Haleakala Volcano. Learn about Maui’s zipline history.
